RnR Las Vegas 13.1 Race Recap

Last weekend was the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Half Marathon! Mom, Kristen, and I traveled to Las Vegas for a fun little girls’ weekend and to run the 5k and half marathon.  Read all about our Las Vegas trip here!

We picked up our packets and went to the expo on Thursday afternoon, and enjoyed a couple days exploring the city before the 5k on Saturday night and then the half marathon on Sunday night.

Sunday morning we laid low, went to a movie to rest our legs, and eventually got ready for the half marathon and made our way to the start festival!  The weather decided to treat us like crap, and it got pretty chilly, and very windy in Las Vegas on Sunday afternoon.

Photo Nov 22, 4 04 58 PM

Kid Rock was playing at the start festival.  He was pretty good, and even said at one point that this was the fittest crowd he has ever played for! Hah!

We checked our bags into actual UPS trucks, that would then drive our stuff to the finish line, further up the Strip.  There were also more porta-potties than I’ve ever seen.

Mom, Mark, and I walked Kristen up as far as we could, she was to start up in the 4th corral, and we then walked back to the 35th corral to wait.  We heard the countdown, and the fireworks for the start of the race… and then we waited.  And waited.  And waited.  And got cold and stiff.  And waited some more.

About 55 minutes after the race officially started, our corral got to the start line, and then we were off!  It had rained a bit while we were waiting, and started raining more after we started.  Between the rain, the wind, and the chilly temperatures, as well as standing around getting stiff for over an hour, it was a pretty rough start.

The first few miles were spent trying to shake out our legs and get into a groove.  We were pretty cold, windblown, and getting rained on! It was a pretty miserable first few miles!  Mom, Mark, and I ran past the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign, and had to stop real fast for a picture!

After 2-3 miles, I was feeling pretty good, I was warmed up, there was lots of music, lots of spectators braving the cold and wet weather, and lots of fun signs.  It really was neat to run on the strip while there was nobody but runners on it!  The Las Vegas marathon/half marathon is only 1 of 2 times each year that the strip is closed to traffic – the other is New Years Eve.  Lots of high fives were given out during miles 2-6.

I tried for some running selfies, but the dark really makes it hard!  I managed to get a couple where you can kind of see what’s going on, just ignore all the blurs!

I found a few pictures after the race that the helicopters and drones took during the race, they look pretty spectacular.  If only it wasn’t so cold and windy!

Just after mile 4 or 5, we had to stop and take a pit stop at the porta-potties.  This is the very first time I’ve had to utilize the porta-potties during a race.  Standing around for over an hour before the race made it hard to hold it!

A mile or so after our quick stop, we came across the finish line on the other side of the street.  With some kind of voodoo luck, Mom and I actually SAW Kristen cross the finish line!  What are the odds of that?  We yelled and yelled, but the music was too loud, but WE SAW HER finish!!

Photo Nov 17, 11 38 11 AM

I had to get a quick selfie with one of so many Elvis’ on the course.  This particular Elvis was pretty cute.  We ran behind them for about a half mile.

Photo Nov 15, 9 11 06 PM

Sometime between miles 5-7, we lost Mark.  He ended up about 7-10 minutes behind us I think.  There were so many people, it was hard to keep track of everything.  Mom and I just kept trucking forward, struggling with the cold, very very tired feet from walking around the strip for 4 days, and really defeating weather conditions.  We were very lucky that we didn’t fall or get blown over – I heard of several people who got blown over, or got injured with things blowing into them.  We also saw a lady right in front of us trip or slip on something and face plant.  I hope that everyone who fell or blown over was okay.

Miles 6-10 were pretty monotonous and tiring and cold.  So cold.  During this time we were at the very old part of downtown, and off the main Strip.  We made our way through some neighborhoods, and through a few shady areas that I wouldn’t want to be alone!  Then we went through Fremont Street, gained a bit of energy, and started making our way back to the Strip and the finish line.

I’d have to say that miles 10-13 were the roughest ever, out of any half marathon I’ve done.  R.O.U.G.H. !!! My feet hurt so bad.  I was so cold to the bones.  My nose was running, my nose was cold, my ears were cold, my shoulders were cold, my feet hurt.  It was a rough few miles.

But somehow, we made it.  Step after step, walking and running and shuffling.  Really everything but crawling.  Mom and I finished hand in hand, and then all we wanted was to sit down and warm up.

We were handed our medals, then water, then a space blanket, then sample after sample of food, gatorade, milk, cranberries, etc.  So much stuff.  I didn’t have enough arm space for all the stuff.  And that finish chute was SO long.  I heard someone say it was almost a half mile long finish chute.  Walking and walking and walking!  We finally found the UPS trucks and put on jackets and dumped all our extra stuff into our bags.

Photo Nov 15, 10 46 03 PM

We also were given our remix medal for doing the 5k on Saturday and the half marathon on Sunday.  We slowly made our way back to our hotel on very foot sore feet.

I must say, if the weather was a bit warmer, less windy, and dry, this would have been a super fun half marathon.  It was fun, in retrospect, but during, it was hard to think about the fun during all the pain!

Photo Nov 15, 11 11 29 PM

We ran the strip at night, shut down Vegas, and earned every bit of our medals!

Photo Nov 16, 12 11 31 AM

Monday, we did a little shakeout run and met some of the We Run Social group!

RnR Las Vegas 5k Race Recap

Last weekend was the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas 5k! Mom, Kristen, and I traveled to Las Vegas for a fun little girls’ weekend and to run the 5k and half marathon.  Read all about our Las Vegas trip here!

We picked up our packets and went to the expo on Thursday afternoon, and enjoyed a couple days exploring the city before the 5k on Saturday night.

Photo Nov 12, 5 04 53 PM

Friday morning we had a quick shakeout run to the Fabulous Las Vegas sign, our first run in Las Vegas!

Photo Nov 13, 3 10 54 PM

Saturday morning was race morning! We all got dressed in our sparkle skirts and KC Running Company shirts, and headed out!

Photo Nov 14, 12 14 36 PM

We kind of did things backwards, by getting our pedicures and pampering done before the race!

Photo Nov 14, 2 17 03 PM

We had a late lunch at BURGR, watched the Bellagio fountains, and made our way to the race area, which was at the fairgrounds near the SLS Hotel.

Photo Nov 14, 5 36 49 PM

There were lots of other runners doing the 5k that we met on the Monorail.  I also found out that my sisser loves me… I almost didn’t make it onto the Monorail, but Kristen hugged me onto the train just before the door shut. Awww she loves me!

Photo Nov 14, 6 07 33 PM

The lobby area at the SLS was really cool, glass floors and ceilings that changed colors, lots of ceiling mirror selfies happened.

Photo Nov 14, 6 27 49 PM

The start/finish party area of the 5k was all set up and ready to go! We took some pictures, checked our bags, got some fun glow sticks, and got into the corrals.

We started in the 4th or 5th wave, and off we went!! The race was tons of fun… we mostly stayed in and around the fairgrounds, and a good section of the race was an out and back, so we got to see the first few waves coming back towards us, which allowed us to see lots of fun costumes and outfits.  Kristen even got a high five from Meb Keflezighi, the winner of the New York Marathon in 2009, Boston Marathon in 2014, an Olympic silver medalist Marathoner, and overall amazing American runner, who was pacing one of the corrals (he also paced the half marathon).

Photo Nov 22, 3 24 56 PM

Once we crossed the finish line, we were handed our 5k medals, and grabbed our checked bags and got into some warmer clothes.  The race wasn’t cold, but it was chilly and dark.  If only we could have had the 5k weather for the half marathon the next day…

Photo Nov 22, 3 26 21 PM

We took the monorail back down the strip to it’s end, near our hotel, and were officially finished with 1 of 2 races!

Viva Las Vegas!

Mom, Kristen, and I recently traveled to Las Vegas for a girls weekend slash run-cation to the Las Vegas Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon series (5k and half marathon).  I have tons and tons of pictures to share, so this post will just be the trip part, and I’ll write a race recap for both the 5k and the half marathon, with lots more pictures! I hope to share my race recaps tomorrow, but for tonight, here’s our trip, in photos!

Early, early Thursday morning, Mom and I were on a plane, and Kristen was on a plane, heading to Fabulous Las Vegas!

We all met in Vegas, and it was still early morning there!  Aren’t time changes wonderful?  Anyway, we got checked into our hotel, and began wandering around, checking out the Strip.  We stayed at the Excalibur, but walked through many of the hotels/casinos around there to look at the shops and all the fun casino things.

I love the Bellagio and the fountains.  The fountains are so pretty, and I love how the atrium inside changes with each season.  We at lunch at a cafe inside Paris I think, and continued on our journey.  I wish I would have worn my Garmin to see how many steps/miles we walked on Thursday.  It was A. LOT.

We eventually made our way to the Las Vegas Convention Center, for  packet pickup and the expo for the race.

Packets were picked up, sparkly skirts were purchased, and lots of other stuff was bought, tried, or looked at.  Kristen won a shirt from the Air National Guard for doing pull ups.  Go sisser!

Photo Nov 12, 6 57 24 PM

Not too much else happened on the first day.  A lot of time was spent walking around looking at stuff, and lots of time was spent at the expo.  By  the time we got back to our hotel, still kind of on Central Time, we were ready for bed, tired from traveling, walking around the entire city, and checking out the expo.

Friday morning, we grabbed breakfast (the first of 4 meals eaten at the all-day buffet!), walked over to the Luxor to check it out, and then got ready for our first Vegas run.

Photo Nov 13, 1 04 59 PM

We walked over to the Mandalay Bay too, and went over by the aquarium.  Mom found a stuffed stingray, and of course, Kristen and I fell in love with the “majestic sea flap flaps” and we each just had to get one.

Photo Nov 13, 1 38 14 PM

Our first race was on going to be Saturday night, but we wanted to get a run in, so we ran from the Excalibur to the Fabulous Las Vegas sign, took some pictures, ran a bit further, then turned around and ran back.  I don’t recommend running further south than the sign (if you ever have the desire to do so), there are no sidewalks!  It was runnable on the gravelly shoulder, but wasn’t the best running surface.

There were lots of people taking pictures, and we didn’t want to wait in the line, so w kind of went off to the side and got some pics with the famous sign.

I managed to get a fun running selfie on the way back to the Excalibur.  Because, of course I did!

Photo Nov 13, 2 24 18 PM

We got back to the hotel, ate our second of four buffets, then showered and figured out a plan for the evening.  We wanted to go to a show while we were in town, and decided on Cirque Du Soleil Zarkana.  We ate our early dinner at the buffet, three of four trips to the buffet, if you’re keeping track, then had a drink and made our way to the show!

Now, if you’ve been to Vegas, you know that getting anywhere at all is not easy.  There are ups and downs and turns and this shuttle and that monorail and then around through this casino… it goes on and on.  So we wanted to get to the Aria, from the Excalibur, and I think, between everything, it took us just about an hour.  That was not a fun hour.  Lots of speed walking, running, frustrations, and casinos between us and the show.

Photo Nov 13, 6 51 37 PM

We finally got there, and the show was amazing!! I loved it!  Cirque du Soleil did not disappoint.  I would definitely go to another show someday.  The stuff they can do is just mind-blowing.

We took a Lyft back to our hotel (where had you been all our lives!?!), had our fourth and final buffet snack/late dinner, and crashed.

Photo Nov 13, 8 07 38 PM

Saturday morning was race morning! Of course, the race wasn’t until 6:00 at night, so we had a whole day to spend before our race!  We went ahead and got all dressed up in our race outfits, and ventured to Red Rocks Running Company, a local Las Vegas running store.  After visiting them, we got pedicures, and then made our way back to the Strip to have lunch and get to the race.

Kristen had this idea that we all had to match for the race… so we bought Sparkle Athletic skirts at the race expo, and wore our KC Running Co. tanks tops.

Once we got back to the Strip, we ate at BURGR, Gordon Ramsay’s upscale hamburger restaurant, in Planet Hollywood.  Tasty burger!

Mom played with the showgirls, and then we went to the Bellagio to watch the fountains for a little bit.

We got to the SLS Hotel, and waited for the 5k to start across the street.  The 5k race recap is here!  KCRC represented at the Las Vegas RNR 5k!

Once we made our way back to our hotel, we were ready for bed, and then Sunday morning was race morning again!  The half marathon started at 4:30, and before the race, we had breakfast, then went to a movie to kill some time and stay off our legs.  The weather, unfortunately, took a bad turn and was extremely windy and cold!  Half Marathon race recap is here!

2 races, 2 days, 3 medals.  Very tired feet and legs, but a very happy girl!

Photo Nov 15, 11 11 29 PM

Monday, we met up with the We Run Social group in front of the Bellagio, then Mom, Kristen, and I headed out for a short little shake out run.

Photo Nov 16, 3 48 40 PM

Photo Nov 21, 8 51 00 PM

We ended our run as close as we could get to In-N-Out Burger, because we had never had it, and we’d all heard it was amazing, so we just had to try it out!  It was just as delicious as we’d heard.  We had our double double’s animal style.  I don’t exactly remember what all was added with animal style, but we had extra sauce, mustard mixed in with our meat, and other yummy additions.  We ran into Mark and his wife at In-N-Out Burger.  What are the odds?!

Photo Nov 21, 8 50 28 PM

After our In-N-Out trip, we changed into our swimsuits and spent a lot of the afternoon in the hot tub and sauna.

Photo Nov 16, 6 23 08 PM

After the spa trip, we ate at Dick’s Last Resort, a restaurant where the employees are obnoxious and make fun of you, all in good fun.

Photo Nov 16, 8 25 52 PM

We packed most of our stuff up on Monday night, because our flights were in the morning on Tuesday.  A bit more time was spent chilling in bed with our majestic sea flap flaps, and then it was early to bed for an early rising to head home!

Photo Nov 16, 10 20 13 PM

Tuesday was the travel day! We sent Kristen off, then Mom and I had a bit of a wait for our flight, and then before you knew it, we were back in KC.  Mom headed for home on Wednesday morning.

Lots more to talk about, regarding the 5k and the half marathon.  More to come!  Mom and Kristen, I had a blast in Las Vegas, and really enjoyed our girls weekend!
