2017: February Running

On February 1, I sprained my ankle during the last half mile of my 4 mile run. It got pretty bruised and swollen, and I took just about 10 days off running to let it heal. I did run a mile after 6 days, which initially felt great, but my ankle told me it was too early to be running and I took a few more days off.  I definitely did not run as much as I wanted to in February, but managed to get in 53 miles for the month.  I ran 55 miles in January, you can read all about it here.

After spraining my ankle and not running for a bit, Mom and Dad came down for the 2nd weekend of the month, and we got in a run while Dad biked along; it was the first real run I had since hurting my ankle.

We had some crazy unseasonably warm weather in February, and Chris and had a couple walks/hikes by the lake.  We found this great trail at Shawnee Mission Park that we want to hike, and maybe eventually run – it’s about 3 miles out, and then it ends, so we’d get a 6 mile hike or run out of it.

As far as running goes, I had several good runs, despite my ankle sprain.  Towards the end of the month, my runs have definitely been feeling stronger.  I ran with Chris several times, with KCRC, friends, and Mom and Dad once too… nice variety of running company in February.

I went to a couple cycle classes in February, and I’ve missed them! I need to get back to cycle more often.  Chris went with me, and enjoyed it as well.  We may have a new most-Monday nights tradition!

Looking forward to March, I hope to continue rehabbing my ankle and put in some good quality training runs for the Rock the Parkway half marathon, which is my next race, coming up on April 8.

The February Run Down

February flew by! It’s hard to believe it’s March, and spring is just around the corner.  The first two months of 2016 have definitely not been the most normal for me, in terms of running.  In December, I set out with a goal to run 1100 miles this year, as well as a handful of other goals.  With a low mileage month in January, as well as a low mileage month in February, I’ve rethought a lot of my goals, and I will write more about that on Thursday.

February started out with a doctor’s appointment, and I was told that my knee is structurally ok, and I’ve been seeing the chiropractor pretty regularly to work on strengthening muscles that aren’t activating and working on getting stronger to be able to build up my mileage.  Because I couldn’t run as much the first two months of the year, I’ve been cycling a lot, and I’ve really been enjoying it.

I had a race in February, my first of the year.  Amy and I ran the Kickoff 5k, which was a 5k around Arrowhead Stadium, on Super Bowl Sunday.  We volunteered this race last year, so it was a fun experience to both volunteer and run it. My race recap is here.

I ran with the KC Running Co. Groupies 5 times in February, including a fun Leap Day run in Martin City.  Michelle even came to one of the Groupie runs, which was a ton of fun!  There were so many nice evenings for runs in February; it was even 75 degrees one day!

Mom and Dad came to town for a weekend, and we all went to a cycle class on Saturday, which was tons of fun! Mom and I ran then on Sunday, and Dad biked along with us, which was great! We saw some deer and a pretty woodpecker and enjoyed the perfect February weather.

I even got Amy to come to one of my cycling classes, and then when we tried to run after, I tripped off the sidewalk and skinned my elbow pretty bad.  I’m really graceful like that.

All in all, February was a good month as far as being active.  I wish I could have run more, but with cycling and running, I think I did pretty good!  I took lots of classes, ran pretty consistently, though each run was shorter than I would have preferred.  Looking forward to March, I have only one race, the Whiskey Run 5k.  Like I said earlier, I’m going to write about my goals and my thoughts about those goals, on Thursday.  How did your February go? Monday Mentionings: February 22

Hello everyone, and happy Monday! This past week has been such a nice week, weather wise, at least in the midwest.  Temps got into the 70s here in KC, and it actually was as warm as 91 degrees in Hays one day last week.

Tuesday was actually pretty windy, but Amy and I got in a few miles before it got dark! I didn’t even have to use my headlamp.  I’m beyond excited for lighter evenings.

The fountains were turned on at work last week. It was neat to watch the groundskeeper in his boat, getting everything ready to go, and then they were on! Spring is coming, indeed.

Thursday evening was a super fun evening! First off, it was nearly 70 degrees!!!  Secondly, my bestie roomie came with me to the group (she’s in the white shirt next to me), and she even ran a couple miles with my best Amy and I!  We test ran in some cool Hokas, I tried to get a runfie and it was blurry (but still fun). The wind though… OH. MY. GOODNESS.  That was some strong wind.  Wind, plus a gnarly uphill into the wind made for a difficult second half of the run.  Afterwards, Hoka and KC Running Co had Oreos for us!  Then, Amy, Michelle, Jenn and I went to grab a bite to eat (and custard) at Culver’s.  Yummy!

Friday, a coworker  brought these Sesame Crisps to share.  He is originally from China, and recently visited family in China, and brought these back.  They were not actually as green as the photo, and they kind of tasted like dirt and popcorn and tea all together.  The consistency was the weirdest, it was like compacted very fine, damp sand… how you can touch sand like that and it kind of crumbles part, that is what this was like when I put it in my mouth, it kind of dissolved and disintegrated.  It was very strange.  It was not bad, it kind of didn’t taste like much, but the consistency was so strange.  It was really cool to try this though.

Friday afternoon, Michelle sent me the picture below.  Jasper jumped up and laid on the other end of the couch.  He’s been slowly growing accustomed to having her live with us.  They’ll be best buds soon. 😉

Friday evening, it was just so dang nice, I had to get out and run a couple miles before my parents arrived.  There were so many people outside, walking, playing in the park, running, cycling.  It was a gorgeous evening, I just couldn’t pass it up.  Shortly after I got home, Mom and Dad got here!  We went to K Macho’s to eat, the first many great food stops during the weekend.

Saturday morning, I took Mom and Dad to The Athletic Club of Overland Park, where I have a gym membership.  We took a cycle class, and sweated buckets!  It was a lot of fun, I’m really glad they were able to come to class with me.

Saturday for lunch, we “opened up” the Joy Wok Chinese buffet.  We arrived at 10:55 (in the morning, hahahaha) and were the second people in the door.  Surprisingly, there were about 6 or 7 tables of people ready to eat right at 11.  Chinese brunch, anyone?

After we ate, we checked out the deals at Scheels, REI, and the KC Running Co store.  I kind of got in trouble for riding the fat tire bike at Scheels – they told me I could test ride it, but I had to take it outside to the track, I could get hurt by hitting my head on a rack, or falling over into a display.  They apparently don’t know how good of a bike rider I am. Ha!  I guess these fat tire bikes are the coolest thing right now, there were fat tire bikes up to $2,000.

We also had to stop by my old neighborhood and see how Edgar the Swan was doing.  He saw mom and torpedo’d all the way across the pond to check her out, and lunged at her a couple times.  He made sure to follow us as far as he could as we walked back up the trail to the car.  That is one angry swan.

After some more shopping and wandering around Overland Park, we headed back to the apartment for a bit.  All of the sudden we heard what sounded like an ice cream truck.  Lo and behold, there was an ice cream van playing La Cucaracha driving through the apartment complex.  Not sure if that’s legal or not, but this guy was certainly taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather!

Later Saturday night, we went to Grinders Stonewall for some amazing pizza.  I had seen and heard about Grinders in the Crossroads district, but hadn’t realized there was a Grinders in Lenexa.  It was amazing; I’ll definitely be going back!  Mom and Dad each had a calzone, and they were the biggest calzones we had ever seen.  I had a pizza, and it was delicious.  Even cooler, this location of Grinders is in an old house turned inn turned restaurant.  It was very unique, and very tasty.

Sunday morning, Mom and I ran on the trails, while Dad biked along with us.  It was a bit chillier, but still amazing weather for February!  We saw 3 deer, multiple squirrels and robins and blue jays and ducks, and we even got to watch a woodpecker peck for a minute.  It was really a beautiful morning on the trails.

Then for lunch, we went to Burg and Barrel and had some good burgers, and got to see Amy and chat a bit too! This sign in the bathroom made me giggle.

Dad enjoyed piling toys on Jasper yesterday afternoon, then we strung out all his toys in a row, and he promptly sniffed them and laid down on them.  This kitty is spoiled, but I love him.

Overall, it was a great week, and a suburb weekend with Mom and Dad.  I loved having them in town for the weekend.  I hope everyone has a great week, enjoy the weather, and the last week of February!
