Ten

I’ve now completed 10 half marathons.  Each one has taught me very important things, about myself and about life…

My first half marathon, April 12, 2014, Eisenhower Half Marathon.  I learned that 13.1 miles is a damn long way to run.

My second half marathon, October 18, 2014, Kansas City Half Marathon.  I learned that Kansas City is super hilly.  And beautiful.

My third half marathon, April 11, 2015, Rock the Parkway Half Marathon.  I learned that running with a sinus infection and bronchitis is not fun.

My fourth half marathon, May 16, 2015, Scout Strong Half Marathon.  I learned that not all half marathons are created equal. Some are never to be repeated.

My fifth half marathon, June 6, 2015, Hospital Hill Half Marathon.  I learned that I prefer fall half marathons to late spring/summer half marathons.

My sixth half marathon, October 17, 2015, Kansas City Half Marathon.  I learned that I can push past my comfort zone.

My seventh half marathon, November 15, 2015, Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Half Marathon.  I learned that this race is overrated, and Vegas is smelly.

My eighth half marathon, April 9, 2016, Rock the Parkway Half Marathon.  I learned exactly how amazing the running community in KC is.  How amazing? SO VERY AMAZING!

My ninth half marathon, May 14, 2016, Running with the Cows Half Marathon.  I learned that having someone to look forward to on the course, my special people, can help get me through a rough race.

My tenth half marathon, June 4, 2016, Hospital Hill Half Marathon.  I learned that no matter what, relentless forward progress will get me through each and every race.

Be who you want to be

Monday again!

Last Monday evening is one I won’t soon forget! I go to cycle class [almost] every single Monday evening.  I call my Mom after work on my way home, or to the gym, etc, EVERY.SINGLE.DAY.  Well, last Monday was no different.  I called Mom on my way to the gym (about a 2-3 minute drive from work), and she didn’t answer.  I didn’t call her a second time, because by then, I was at the gym.  I figured I would just call her after the gym.  Apparently, Mom’s phone didn’t actually register my call, so didn’t have a missed call.

When I finished with my hour long cycle class, around 6:30, and made it down to my locker, I heard my phone buzzing, so I answered it real quick.  It was my sister, and she said Mom had lost me, and to call her right away.  I called Mom, and she told me Amy was on her way to find me, because I wasn’t answering my phone.  By the time it was all said and done, I think I had 4 missed calls, a voicemail, 8 text messages (from 4 different people) and 2 calls to the gym to find my whereabouts.  Amy was about halfway to my house, and I imagine my mom was minutes away from hopping in the car to drive 4 here herself!

I was just in cycle class!  I’m thankful and lucky to have such an amazing family and friends, who care about me enough to track me down when I go missing, even though I wasn’t lost or missing.

There’s really no caption for this.  It’s just Jasper, doing what he does, napping and being adorable.

Thursday evening, Mom and Dad got to town for the weekend.  Amy came over, and Dad rode his bike while Amy and Mom and I ran a few shakeout miles.  It was absolutely gorgeous out, and we had a great few miles on the trails.

Friday morning, Kristen flew in, and Mom, Dad, and Kristen came to see my office building.  I got off at noon, and we hung out all afternoon, and went to Grinders for pizza and calzones that evening.

After dinner, we laid out our flat runners, and Dad said he wanted to do a flat Dad.  Kristen laid out Flat Dad to match the rest of them.

Saturday morning we got up WAY early, and made it to Bucyrus, KS about an hour and a half before the Running with the Cows half marathon and 5k.  I’ll write a recap later on this week, but it was a great race, though I had a little less than perfect race.  Half marathon #9 in the books!  Kristen raced the 5k, and won! I’m so proud of her!

We celebrated with Ted’s Cafe and margaritas!

Sunday, after sleeping in a tiny bit, we all got up and around, and made it out to Shawnee Mission Park, where Mom and I ran a short shakeout, and then Kristen ran her long run, and Dad and Mom and I biked along.  It was a beautiful day, and a really fun run/ride/adventure.

Sunday afternoon, Kristen had to fly home, so we drove out to the airport and back.  It was sad to see her go; the weekend was really fun and went really fast.  Mom and Dad and I hung out Sunday night, and had some ice cream.  Mom and Dad bought a fold up wagon, and Jasper had to check it out.

Well, that’s about all I’ve got for today!  I’ll get my race recap out this week!  I hope your week is great!

Monday Mentionings: May 9

Hello and happy Monday! Do you know what? I didn’t take a single picture all week, until Friday! What on earth was I doing instead of taking pictures?! Anyway, I’ll quickly recap my week for you, without pictures!  Let’s see… Monday night I went to cycle class.  Tuesday night I ran 5 miles with Amy.  Wednesday night I ran 4 miles with Amy.  Thursday night I ran 4 miles with the Groupies.

Friday was a fun day at work, we got to celebrate the Kentucky Derby by wearing our Kentucky Derby best, and even got to watch some stick horse races.  We have a lot of fun at work!

Saturday morning, I did an hour of cycling, and then ran 3 miles.  It’s been pretty humid, and I am definitely not used to it yet.  It’s only going to get warmer and more humid, so I hope my body figures it out soon!  Later on Saturday, I ran some errands with Amy and Joshua, cleaned my house, and then watched Pitch Perfect 2.  Saturday perfection.

Sunday morning, Amy and I ran 7 miles on the trails.  It was our last longish run before Running with the Cows, in 5 days!  We came across this big snapping turtle, and to say Amy was scared of him is an understatement! She wouldn’t get anywhere close to him!

Sunday night, Michelle brought me a snoball from Hays! MMMMMMmmmmmm!!!!! She was home for the weekend, and was the coolest ever and brought me a snoball.  I thought about trying to wait and drink it Monday, but I didn’t.  It was gone Sunday night.  Delish.

To all the moms out there, Happy Mother’s Day! I’m very excited for this coming weekend – my parents are coming to town and Kristen’s flying in too!
