The Comeback

It’s been a year since my knee was cut open for the second time in it’s life.  9 days after that, it was cut open for the third time. The past year has been a year of struggles and and rehab and finding my groove. It’s not been an easy year, but I’ve learned so much about myself this past year.

I spent 10 weeks on crutches, 5 months in therapy, missed hundreds of miles of running in the past year. I gained strength in my legs and heart, found a new love for biking, and I’ve learned how to track my food and lose weight, even without regular exercise. I’ve appreciated every run I’ve been on, even the runs that ended in tears.

I still have some pain in my knee, but the pain is so much less than it was, and it’s a different pain. It’s mostly a pain of muscle and tendon tightness, not the nagging, grinding nerve pain I had previously. I know as I continue to lose weight and increase miles slowly, and keep building strength, the pain will lessen and I will settle in to a running routine that feels like me.

It’s been a rough year, but it’s also been a good year, since I had surgery 365 and 356 days ago. It’s been a year of healing. I’m ready for the next chapter. The year of building. The comeback.

Happy Monday!

BASEBALL IS BACK! The Royals’ season started last week Monday, and unfortunately, they haven’t been off to the greatest start, but the season is long, and I’m #raisedroyal!  I wore my Royals scarf last Monday to celebrate opening day!

After over a week of rainy weather and crappy allergy / sinus problems, the sun finally peeked out Thursday of last week, and it’s been warm and windy and feeling like spring.  Everything is blooming and greening and flowering like crazy because of all the rain we’ve had.  And this is the worst view ever from where I work… 😛

Friday, Chris and I went to the Rock the Parkway expo to grab our race packets, then came home and made spaghetti.  Jasper was quite interested in my food, as always.

Saturday morning, Chris and I did the Rock the Parkway Half Marathon! It was my 13th half, and Chris’ 2nd.  I’ll have a race recap up later this week; I’m still working on sorting through my thoughts.  It wasn’t a good race for me, and I’m still processing things.

After the race, we got cleaned up and met up with Chris’ best friends, who came to town from the central Missouri area.  We walked around and shopped a bit at Legends before grabbing BBQ and eating at the park.   We weren’t thrilled to walk around all afternoon after a half marathon, but I think it helped loosen up our legs a bit. I know my legs felt better, but still very tired, after all the walking.

Sunday morning, we drove to Topeka to meet Mom and Dad, and meet little Skye puppy, before going to a family lunch at my aunt and uncle’s house.  My cousins were in town visiting, and my grandparents drove down too, so it was really nice to see everyone.  Kristen and Thayne were the only ones missing.

Skye is so adorable. I wanted to take her home!  She’s a little firecracker, for sure.

It was really great to see everyone!

This week, I’m going to tackle a few “to do” items on our wedding checklist, and get back on the roads once I process a bit of running stuff that I have going on mentally.

Congrats to everyone who ran Rock the Parkway, or any other race over the weekend, especially to my little sister and her team who ran the Ragnar So Cal relay and kicked butt!! Have a great week, friends!

Monday Mentionings: October 24

How is it late October?! This month has gone so fast.

After the half marathon last Saturday, I took it easy for a couple days, and dove back into running on Tuesday night, with Chris. Then on Wednesday, I ran a beautiful, easy 5 miler as the sun set.

Thursday night, Chris and I ran on the trails, and I had the best playlist.  I’ve been using Rock My Run lately, and this playlist was just perfect! I will definitely be using this one again.

Saturday, I grabbed lunch with Amy, and of course, we showed up in the same shirt.  I can’t tell you how many times that’s happened! Later, I tagged along with Chris to his band’s practice.  I love listening to them live, it’s so much fun!  Shameless girlfriend plug: they have a show coming up on Nov. 5, for anyone in the KC area who wants to go! Details here.

Yesterday morning, Chris and I went to Leawood City Park to run, which was gorgeous.  It’s so pretty out on the trails, especially in fall.  I can’t get enough of the beauty on the trails.

After running, we grabbed lunch, and while we were waiting, I had a little snapchat fun.

Sunday afternoon, we went down south to check out the Louisburg Cider Mill! We watched the apples going into the mill for a while, and had apple cider slushes and apple cider donuts, too.

Then we walked through the corn maze, which was unfortunately all trampled on, so it wasn’t as much of a maze as it was a path through the corn fields.  It was a gorgeous day, and it was really nice to see so many people out enjoying the Cider Mill.

Looking ahead to this week, I shouldn’t have too much going on, aside from a few training runs during the evenings. I’m hoping the weather continues to cool down, it’s been a pretty warm fall so far.  Have a great week, friends!
