The July Run Down

What a month, folks!  I had a bit lower mileage in July than in previous months this year, but still managed to finish out July with 80 miles, putting my yearly total at 583 miles! I’m still on track to hit 1000 miles for the year, I’ll need to average about 83 miles each month to get there.  With half marathon training ramping up again, I hope to build my monthly mileage up to between 100 and 120 miles over the next couple months.  Previous months’ recaps here: January, February, March, April, May, and June.

Each of the 5 weekends in July had fun running things happening, so let’s get to it!

All the way back at the beginning of July, I went to Hays with Amy and Michelle.  While we were there for the holiday weekend, we all ran the Wild West 5k, and had a great long weekend together, including 2 other fun runs with Mom and Amy.

The second weekend in July was also a busy one; I did my very first duathlon.  It was a fun day, a very tiring morning, but it was fun, and I even won first place in my age group! Read my race recap here.

The third weekend in July, I ran with Chris for the first time!  It was his longest run to date, and it was a fun running date, too!  And then we also got to wait for an hour for AAA to come break into my car because I locked my keys inside.

The 4th weekend in July was the Rock the Crossroads 5k.  Chris and I went down to the Crossroads and ran the 5k together.  This was Chris’ first 5k, and my second year Rocking the Crossroads.  I’m proud of Chris for killing his first 5k!

The last weekend in July, I ran 5 miles with Chris on Saturday, again, his longest to date! Then on Sunday, I ran 6 miles (in the rain), which was my longest run of the month.  I had a bit lower mileage for July, but it ended up being a really fun month filled with lots of great runs.

I made it to 3 cycle classes in July, and tried a Kickboxing class, too.  I didn’t get to bike as much as I would have liked, but hope to pick up some extra biking miles in August.

I ran with the KCRC Groupies twice in July.  With Amy being out with a foot injury, she wasn’t there to make me get up early on Sundays and run! I  made it to two Thursday night runs, one of which was a popsicle run – run a mile, eat a popsicle, run another mile, eat another popsicle.  It was fun, but 2 miles in that heat, and 2 popsicles with that sugar was more than enough!   I hope to get back to some Tuesday night speed sessions with the groupies in August.

Looking forward to August, I have 2 5ks, the Diva Dash and the Blacklight Run, both on the same day! One is in the morning, and the other is after dark.  That’ll be a fun day!

July Run-Down:
Running: 22 runs, 80 miles total.
Cycling: 3 cycle classes, 1.5 hours, and 1 11 mile bike ride (duathlon), totaling 33 miles.
Longest Run: 6 mile run, July 31.
Races: Wild West 5k, Shawnee Mission Duathlon, Rock the Crossroads 5k

Monday Mentionings: July 25

Monday Monday!  Last Monday, I forgot my gym bag at home, so instead of going straight to the gym after work, I went home and ran the mile to the gym, cycled for a half an hour, then ran the mile back home.  H.O.T.  I had quite the puddle under my spin bike.

Wednesday, I used the gym at work, to run during lunch.  The gym at work is nice, but it is rough to get in a few miles at lunch time with as hot as it is outside.

Thursday evening, Michelle went to the KCRC Groupies run with me! When she was rooming with me, she went to a group run, and it happened to be a Hoka test run.  Thursday night, Hoka was back for another run!

We actually did a “popsicle run” – run a mile, eat a popsicle. Run another mile, eat another popsicle.  Thanks for a really fun run, Hoka and KC Running Co!

And of course, I had to take a runfie. 😛

After our run, Michelle and I had dinner, then went to Sprouts.  I’d never been before, and it certainly wasn’t a trip to forget.  Between facetiming my parents to show them quail meat, getting awesome (semi-cheating) deals on milk, and dropping an entire box of blueberries on the ground, it was quite the trip. I definitely love my Belle adventures.

Saturday, Chris and I had brunch and hung out before the race in the evening.  I introduced him to the world of snapchat, so his life will forever be changed.

I wrote a race recap for Rock the Crossroads, and there’s lots of pictures on that post for you to check out.  Then on Sunday, I ran 5 miles on the treadmill because HOT, Chris came over and was able to meet Kristen, as she was in town for a couple hours after having a family reunion, before I had to take her to the airport.

This week, I’m looking forward to going to the Royals game on Wednesday, and hopefully getting in a few runs without dying of HOT.  Have a fantastic week, friends!

Rock the Crossroads 2016

Saturday night, I “rocked” the Crossroads for the second time!

I ran this race last year, and pretty much never wanted to do it again because of the heat and humidity!  A couple weeks ago, work offered to pay for the race for us, so of course I couldn’t say no, even though I’m not a huge fan of night races.  I still wasn’t super excited about the race, especially since my best is out with a foot injury and isn’t able to run right now.

So I also just started seeing Chris a couple week ago too, and he’s just getting into running, and he is also a musician and guitar player, and was excited at the thought of running his first 5k and getting a sweet “rock and roll” themed medal.  So it was a date.

At the race, I met up with several coworkers and chatted before we raced!  There was not really a chance for rain, but a few drops fell from the sky beforehand.  The cloud cover was nice fore the race, it wasn’t quite as hot as last year.

L to R: Me, Jenn, Beth, Joe, and Patrycja from RTS.

Chris did awesome for his first 5k.  The hills, heat, and humidity were pretty awful, but he tackled them like a boss, and we had some fantastic views of the city while we were running.

Once we finished and guzzled lots of water and watermelon, we found friends and had lots of smiles and cheers (congrats, Jenn, on your awesome PR!! And congrats Chris on your very first 5k!).  Chris and I opted to not stay for the concert.  We were both famished, and it was still quite warm.  We walked back to the car and got back to OP just in time to grab a bite to eat before Smashburger closed.

Overall, it was a fun evening, I’m really glad I ended up doing this race again.  Not sure about next year, it is an awfully hot race, but we’ll see.

Have you Rocked the Crossroads? Do you like evening races?
