Monday Mentionings: May 2

Good Monday morning, and happy May! I can’t believe it’s May already, my birthday month! This week, I have one picture from each day last week, with a bonus for Saturday!

Monday evening I hit up the cycle class, and had a great sweaty class.  One of my favorite teachers is leaving, she teaches Saturdays, and I found out that another one of my favorite teachers (she teaches on Monday) is going to take over Saturday mornings. YAY!

Tuesday night after running, Jazzy and I had snuggles on the couch while it rained outside. I had a good 5 miler, then watched The Secret Life of Walter Mitty on TV.  I’d seen it before, and enjoyed watching it again, it’s a quirky movie, but good.

Wednesday night, I had another good 5 miler.  I’ve had some good feeling runs lately.  I’ve also had some difficult runs, but there are ups and downs in everything, right?

Thursday night was Groupie night! We did a slightly different route, which was fun, and hilly! These are good people!

Friday night was full of more snuggles with Jazzy.

Bonus pictures for Saturday: Kristen ran a half marathon with her cousin Martilee, who has Rett Syndrome. Martilee won her age group (YAY MARTILEE!!!) and they both had a great time, even though Kristen was drenched by the rain. I’m so proud of Kristen and her willpower, strength, and bravery, running for Rett Syndrome, and inspiring everyone around her.

Saturday, after running and cycling, I met up with Amy and Joshua, and we had lunch, then ran some errands. Joshua even came with me in my car, giving Amy a few minutes of silence! He’s pretty adorable, if I do say so myself.

Sunday morning, Amy and I headed out for 7-10 miles, and finished out with 8 miles. I have been getting dizzy on my long runs, and unfortunately it happened again yesterday. Around 6-7 miles in, I got dizzy and chilled, and we had to walk quite a bit to finish up our run. We ended up walking about 2 miles at the end, which is frustrating, but I’m working on trying new things each time I run to combat the dizziness. I’m hoping a electrolyte/salt tab before and during the run will help next time, as well as my normal gu and water/gatorade.

Have you ever gotten dizzy during a long run? Any tips?

Favorite month? Mine is MAY!

Monday Mentionings: April 4

Good Monday morning! First things first: BASEBALL IS BACK!!!!!  I was so happy to watch the Royals win opening night last night!

Last week Monday, I went on a fun little [hilly and windy] run with Amy and Sandey.  We ate some gnats, took some timed selfies on the trails, and had a pretty decent run! Afterwards, Sandey made buddies with Jazzy.

Most unfortunately, Tuesday after work, I broke my phone! I was texting my sister about taco Tuesday, and dropped my phone down the stairs at work.  Sad day.  I got my new replacement phone on Wednesday, around lunch, so all worked out.

Thursday evening, I had a  5miler with Jenn and Sandey.  It as a bit less windy, and a real good run! Amy couldn’t join us because she was sick in bed.   We had to celebrate by taking more selfies after we were finished.  Naturally, because how do you know we ran if we don’t take selfies to prove it?

Friday, Kristen and 5 other super speedy ladies started Ragnar Southern California, running for #teamsparkle and #ragnar4rett, to raise money for Rett Syndrome, and race the ultra Ragnar So Cal.  I kept up on social media through Friday evening, and when I went to bed, they were still running. Then when I woke up Saturday, they were STILL running, and finished about 30 hours after they started, relay running 190 miles.  The team did amazing, and raised several tens of thousands of dollars for Rett Syndrome research.  I’m so proud of Kristen and the other Team Sparkle girls.

I spent my Friday evening with Michelle! We went to Grinders Stonewall and had pizza and calzones.  Then we went to the mall, and stopped at the liquor store on our way home.  Friday night, done right.

Jazzy and Belle had a little play session with the pheasant feathers after we got home, too. So sweet, these two.

I may have a bit too much fun with Snapchat.  You can snap me: @renfle.

Saturday morning, I tried my best to kill myself by taking 3 group fitness classes and then running with Amy.  Let me explain: I wanted to go to cycle class so I went for 30 minutes, before meeting Michelle to try my first Pound class, then I stuck around for a 30 minute Kettlebell class.  THEN I met up with Amy and we ran 3 miles!  I’m a bit sore today, especially my lower back, probably from the Kettlebell class.  I LOVED trying Pound though! “Pound is the world’s first cardio jam session inspired by the infectious, energizing, and sweat dripping fun of playing the drums.” (source)

Amy, Joshua, and I went to brunch after our run, then ran some errands.  Sweet little Joshua kept holding my hand; he’s going to be heart breaker someday.

Sunday, after running with Amy, I watched a couple episodes of How to Get Away with Murder, which Jasper slept through.  It’s my new show, I can’t watch enough of it!   I’m about halfway through season 2, has anyone else watched?

By Sunday afternoon, I was ready for the Royals! I’m pretty sure I wore 4 or 5 Royals shirts throughout the weekend, including 3 yesterday – one to run, one to run errands, then one after I showered.  I also got to rock my new KC sunglasses.  It’s good to BE ROYAL!  Michelle and I made some amazingly delicious, and addicting, Amaretto Slushies, and enjoyed drinking them while watching the game last night.  Mmmm!

Recipe:
750 ml Amaretto
12 oz can of frozen pineapple juice
12 oz can of frozen raspberry lemonade
6-8 cups water
1/3 cup sugar
Combine and freeze for 8-12 hours
Add sprite and serve.

Rock the Parkway is in 5 days!!

The March Run Down

March! I’ll cut straight to the chase: I ran 105 miles in March! After reevaluating my goals, and getting rid of my year long 1100 mile goal, my knee continued improve, and I had lots and lots of fantastic runs in March!  Read up on previous months’ run-downs here: January, February.

Between my knee feeling so much better, my glute feeling just about 99% better, and really enjoying my runs, I end up running twice as much in March as I did in each January and February! I ended March with 105 miles, which puts my yearly total at 211.  I still am sticking to my plan of not aiming for a specific number for the year, I’m happy with just running and doing what I can! I biked/cycled 105 miles as well (yesterday when I had 105 miles biked, and had 100 miles running, I knew I had to do a 5 miler to even them up!)

During the first week of March, I traded in my old bike and bought a beautiful (used but new to me) bike. I named her Aspen.  I’ve ridden my bike to work several times, and taken her out for a few bike rides this month too.  My longest ride was a 10 mile ride to Missouri and back! She’s a Trek seven.three, and I love her!

I’ve continued to take cycling classes a couple times a week at the Athletic Club of Overland Park.  Since I ran more in March than I had in January and February, I didn’t take as many classes, and some of the classes I did go to, I only took half the class, so that I could also run.

I somehow only ran with the KC Running Co. groupies twice in March! Between some chilly weather, some scheduling conflicts, a race, and going home for a weekend, I only  managed to get to the Groupies twice!  I did run with friends numerous times, which makes up for missing so many Groupie runs.  I also had my second race of the year, the Whiskey Run 5k, on March 13.  I ended up not running as quickly as I wish I would have, but had a pretty good race, and a dang good breakfast after the race!

Photo Mar 31, 8 48 24 PM

My longest run of the month was 8 miles, which was actually broken up into a solo 5 miler followed by a 3 mile run (5k, actually, for the virtual 5k for Rett Syndrome) with Momma and Shay puppy, in Hays, on March 26.

The entire month, I’ve run a bit longer than previous, during each run.  10 of my runs in March were 5 miles or more!  I think that adding a mile or two to my normal 3-4 mile runs has really helped my endurance, and my mental strength!  Though I’m not aiming, specifically, for 100+ miles each month, I definitely like being able to do some longer runs without feeling like it’s so taxing.  I guess that’s called progress!

Looking forward to April, I have two races, the Rock the Parkway Half Marathon on April 9, and the Trolley Run 4 miler on April 24.  Rock the Parkway begins my 3 half marathons in 3 months, and I’m hoping my knee is up to the task!  Do you have any races coming up?

March Run-Down:
Running: 25 runs, totaling 105 miles.
Cycling: 7 cycling classes, 5.5 hours, and several bike rides, totaling 105 miles.
Longest Run: 8 miles, Mar. 26.
Races: Whiskey Run 5k.
