Diva Dash & Blacklight Run Race Recaps

Saturday morning, I ran the Diva Dash 5k, then Saturday night, I ran the Blacklight Run 5k!  I have 2 race recaps and lots of pictures from my double race Saturday to share!

Amy and I won entries to the Diva Dash 5k, so there was no better plan than to run it together! It was a relatively chilly morning, for August, and it was misty and overcast.  We started conservatively, and picked up the pace each mile to end up with perfect negative splits (each mile was 30 seconds faster than the previous).  We came across the line in my second fastest 5k time, so I was thrilled, especially since I wasn’t in the mood to race!!

After the race, we met up with Sandey and Melissa, and ended up going to brunch after the race.  Side note, there was SO MUCH PINK and SO MANY TUTUS at this race.  Pink overload, for sure.  (Sidenote: notice how I’m the only one not in pink! Stand out people!)

5k #1 of the day DONE!

Saturday evening, I met up with Michelle and lots of her Y friends to run the Blacklight Run 5k.  We ate a quick dinner a coupe hours before the race, then headed out to Sandstone Amphitheater for the race.  (Sidenote: notice how I’m dressed differently than everyone else.  Stand out people!)

I ran into Derek before the race, this was his 24th 5k of the year!

The weather was beyond perfect.  The sun had come out Saturday afternoon and burned off some of the humidity.  It was cool, breezy, and perfect.  Such amazing and unseasonable weather for August.

I ran perfect negative splits (this time each mile was 20 seconds faster than the previous) again for this race, totally unplanned – I was tired and didn’t want to run a second 5k on Saturday, but pushed and ended up besting my 5k time from Saturday morning to pull out my new second best 5k time, only 20 seconds away from my 5k PR, which I was really proud of, considering I had already ran a 5k earlier in day!

We all got back together after the race and celebrated by watching the after party, complete with exploding color packets, blacklights, and loud music.  We headed home a little while later, and I promptly showered and went to bed.

5k #2 of the day done!

Running 2 5k’s in a day was fun, but not really something I’m looking to do again anytime soon! It was a tiring day.  It was really fun to run with lots of different people at different races.

Have you ever ran 2 races in 1 day before? I’ve done 2 races in a weekend before, but never 2 in a day!

Trolley Run 2016

Oops! I had this written earlier in the week, but forgot to hit publish! Anyway, here’s my Trolley Run race recap, a few days late!

The Trolley Run was Sunday, and this was the second year I’ve run it!  Last year, Mom came down to KC and we made a fun weekend out of it.  This year, my race entry was paid for by my employer, so I was really excited to run this race again.

A little history of the Trolley Run (source):

One of the most unique aspects of this race is the point to point racing.  I parked on the Plaza, and took a bus up the trolley trail to the Waldo area, and then ran the race down to the Plaza.  It was a gorgeous morning, and I got to the starting line about 45 minutes before the race was to start.

I met up with several friends before the race started, and was sure to use the bathroom too.  I saw lots of KC Running Co friends, and then met up with my coworkers for a picture before the race started.

The race started after a few announcements and the National Anthem.  There were many blind athletes running this race with guide runners.   I would love to learn how to do this, and I’m planning on looking into it for future races.  If I have any race photos (they should be posted soon), I’ll post them.

The race itself is a fast and flat course, which actually has a net negative elevation from start to finish.  There are a few gentle uphills, but overall the race is considered a downhill race.  Last year, I had a huge 4 mile PR, so for this race, I planned on going out just a tiny bit faster than the pace for last year’s PR, and to see how I felt after a mile, before deciding to push for a PR or back off for an easier run.  I ran 9 miles the day before the race, and my legs felt pretty decent, considering the effort on Saturday.

The miles went by quickly, I got into a groove pretty easily, and was able to push the uphills and stride out a bit on the downhills.  There were lots of spectators, and the “bacon aid station” that I saw last year was there again, which is neat.  There was a water station at the half way mark, and a second water station around mile 3.25.

I ended up running extremely even splits, with the first and last mile times being exactly the same, and the middle two miles being exactly the same, 10 seconds per mile slower than the first and last miles.  I put out a hard effort, and felt like I had a little left in the tank, but not much.  I came in with a 23 second PR, which I was ecstatic with! The PR makes me confident that I can PR my 5k time this year as well.

Let me just talk a minute about the after party! This is an awesome post-race party there was a band, lots of food, drink, massages, and giveaways.  The weather was so perfect, and the Plaza is such  pretty place to hang out with several thousand runners.  I met back up with several friends and coworkers, then ate some popcorn and drank some chocolate milk.

I grabbed the printout of my time, and got my picture taken, then headed home.  The Trolley Run 4 Miler is definitely one of my favorite local races, and I plan to do it again next year, and the year after that…  I’m very thankful to my employer, who paid for my race entry, thank you! For anyone who wants a great race in KC, I highly recommend this one!

Have you run the Trolley Run before?

Monday Mentionings: April 18

First things first, happy Marathon Monday to everyone running the Boston Marathon this morning!

After having a bit of a running rut after the Rock the Parkway half marathon last weekend, I’ve had some great runs toward the end of last week, so that definitely made me feel better, and back on track with things.  I had a good 5 mile solo run last Wednesday, 3 miles with some of my favorite Groupies on Thursday, a successful cycle class, followed by a treadmill run and weight lifting on Saturday, then a really strong 8 miler on Sunday with Amy at KC Running Co.  It’s amazing how good it feels after a strong, hard run!

Jasper was extra pesky when I had salmon and veggies for lunch one day last week.  He not only wanted the salmon, but he wanted the broccoli and corn and green beans too! I’m not even joking, he ate a bit of all of it!

Friday, I got some good news at work, and Michelle and I went out to celebrate that, and also to have our last official roomie bestie dinner together, too! She moved out Saturday – that 2 months went F.A.S.T!  We went to BRGR, which has the very best burger in KC, in my opinion, and pretty dang amazing truffle tots and mac and cheese too.  Tasty meal, the best company.

Lots of memories these last two month, I’m so glad to have had this experience, with the best roomie ever.  I’m glad she’s only 2 miles away, because I miss her already!

Saturday, after my cycle class, treadmill run, and lifting session, all I wanted was nachos! I got my fill at Freebirds.  Those were some yummy nachos.  The rest of Saturday consisted of running errands, helping Michelle move some boxes, and moved some stuff around in my apartment.

Starting on Saturday, it began raining in Hays, and has rained 4-5 inches.  I saw a meme that is pretty accurate… “So, you want rain in Kansas? Here’s a year’s worth of rain at once, so your basement will flood.”  Mom and Dad went out several times and looked at Big Creek, some of the ponds, and other areas of town that are prone to flooding, it’s pretty insane how much rain there was.

After running with Amy on Sunday morning, we ate breakfast with Michelle, then I had a wonderful nap, and watched the Royals play.  Jasper basked in the sun for a while, which is rare, because he gets warm so quickly with all his black fur.  The rest of the evening, we just relaxed, which was nice!

This weekend I have the Trolley Run on Sunday, and hope to get a long run in on Saturday.  Have a great week! Do you have any races this weekend?
