MM: March 20

This Kansas weather has been all over the place!  Yesterday it was 87 degrees, but earlier in the week it was 20! Insane.

Last week Monday, I went to cycle class. and had a great hard workout.  After not going to class regularly for a few months, it feels good to get back in the saddle once a week or so.

Tuesday, like I said, it was chilly!  I whined enough to make Chris join me on an outdoor run because the sun is finally out later, and it turned out to be a pretty nice run, even though it was cold.

Wednesday night was chilly too, but Amy and I had a great 5 mile run; the sun being out later helps those evening runs SO MUCH!   We had a nice run and got caught up on life happenings.

Saturday morning, we headed out for 10 miles on the trails.  From the very first mile, I knew it was a rough run. The first 5 went great, but I was severely lacking energy, and knew the 5 after the turnaround would be hard.  I made a huge mistake of stopping at the halfway mark to take a gu and try to talk myself up a bit.  Stopping made it so very much harder to get going. I had nothing in the tank.  I ended up walking quite a bit on the way back. Chris powered through and got 10 miles, and I finished with 9.

I was pretty bummed about it, because Chris was feeling good and I was feeling like I was holding him back, but I know hard runs just happen sometimes.  He really helped me push through to finish.  I have to remember that in January and February, I ran about 55 miles each month.  With Saturday’s long run, I have just over 50 miles for March alone. Plus I’m still rehabbing my ankle a bit, so the fact that this run was especially hard shouldn’t have come as a big surprise.

After the run, we went to Longboards for their amazing Cabo Beef Wraps.  Mmmmmmm!

Sunday was a lot of fun! We planned to go to Shawnee Mission Park to walk/hike more of the trail we found a few weeks back.  We headed out for 6 miles, and somehow took a slightly different way back than we went out, but it was absolutely gorgeous out. There were so many people and dogs out, the weather was perfect, even a bit warm!  We finished with 6 miles and definitely want to go back out again soon.

Did you get a chance to enjoy spring over the weekend?

The March Run Down

March! I’ll cut straight to the chase: I ran 105 miles in March! After reevaluating my goals, and getting rid of my year long 1100 mile goal, my knee continued improve, and I had lots and lots of fantastic runs in March!  Read up on previous months’ run-downs here: January, February.

Between my knee feeling so much better, my glute feeling just about 99% better, and really enjoying my runs, I end up running twice as much in March as I did in each January and February! I ended March with 105 miles, which puts my yearly total at 211.  I still am sticking to my plan of not aiming for a specific number for the year, I’m happy with just running and doing what I can! I biked/cycled 105 miles as well (yesterday when I had 105 miles biked, and had 100 miles running, I knew I had to do a 5 miler to even them up!)

During the first week of March, I traded in my old bike and bought a beautiful (used but new to me) bike. I named her Aspen.  I’ve ridden my bike to work several times, and taken her out for a few bike rides this month too.  My longest ride was a 10 mile ride to Missouri and back! She’s a Trek seven.three, and I love her!

I’ve continued to take cycling classes a couple times a week at the Athletic Club of Overland Park.  Since I ran more in March than I had in January and February, I didn’t take as many classes, and some of the classes I did go to, I only took half the class, so that I could also run.

I somehow only ran with the KC Running Co. groupies twice in March! Between some chilly weather, some scheduling conflicts, a race, and going home for a weekend, I only  managed to get to the Groupies twice!  I did run with friends numerous times, which makes up for missing so many Groupie runs.  I also had my second race of the year, the Whiskey Run 5k, on March 13.  I ended up not running as quickly as I wish I would have, but had a pretty good race, and a dang good breakfast after the race!

My longest run of the month was 8 miles, which was actually broken up into a solo 5 miler followed by a 3 mile run (5k, actually, for the virtual 5k for Rett Syndrome) with Momma and Shay puppy, in Hays, on March 26.

The entire month, I’ve run a bit longer than previous, during each run.  10 of my runs in March were 5 miles or more!  I think that adding a mile or two to my normal 3-4 mile runs has really helped my endurance, and my mental strength!  Though I’m not aiming, specifically, for 100+ miles each month, I definitely like being able to do some longer runs without feeling like it’s so taxing.  I guess that’s called progress!

Looking forward to April, I have two races, the Rock the Parkway Half Marathon on April 9, and the Trolley Run 4 miler on April 24.  Rock the Parkway begins my 3 half marathons in 3 months, and I’m hoping my knee is up to the task!  Do you have any races coming up?

March Run-Down:
Running: 25 runs, totaling 105 miles.
Cycling: 7 cycling classes, 5.5 hours, and several bike rides, totaling 105 miles.
Longest Run: 8 miles, Mar. 26.
Races: Whiskey Run 5k.

Monday Mentionings: January 18

Good morning! I think winter has finally arrived – it’s cold, there’s a tiny bit of snow on the ground, and it’s COLD!  I’m super happy that the days are getting a tiny bit longer each evening, it’s not dark until about 20 minutes after I get off work, which is nice.  I’m very ready for spring!

Jasper plays every day with this little hedgehog.  I find it on my bed, in the living room, and he carries it around and flips it up int he air.  It is his favorite toy right now, and he couldn’t be any cuter with it.

Friday at work, we had a food day, and this cheese dip was amazing.  There was a funny story with it too; apparently, a coworker thought the cheese dip was really “spicy soup” the last time it was made, and he ate two bowls of it, before complaining of a stomach ache.  He is from China, and didn’t realize it was cheese dip, because in China, there aren’t a lot of dips, but there are a lot of soups!  Everyone gave him a hard time about it, but he was a good sport, and it was pretty comical to hear the story, and then to see the label on the cheese dip this time around.

Over the weekend, I picked the two winners for the buddy pouch giveaway I had! I’m happy to report that I had over 15 people comment and share the post, which is fantastic! I wish I could have given away a buddy pouch to everyone!  I hope to have more fun giveaways soon!  Jasper was just excited to help me pick the winners out of the hat.

Sunday, I ran for the first time since receiving a cortisone shot in my knee for a lateral meniscus tear.  I ran three miles, with quick walk breaks in between each mile.  My knee felt okay… still felt like a pinch and kind of tight behind my knee, but it felt really good to run again after two weeks off.  I’ve been continuing to go to cycle classes at the gym, I think I’ve been to 5 or 6 classes since taking a break from running.  The classes are good, and my knee feels okay during cycling.  As the day went on Sunday, my knee got kind of sore and stiff, so I’m hoping it’ll loosen up and re-aclimate to running quickly.

Amy and I had some fun over the weekend too.  Saturday, we met for brunch, then ran some errands together  I took a couple bags of clothes to Ditto and they bought some of them from me, so I ended up with a bit of extra cash, which was nice! We spent some time at the mall, and Target, of course.  Then Sunday, we went back to Ditto for Amy to sell some clothes, had a late lunch at Pie Five, and somehow, ended up back at Target again.  It was nice to get out of the house for a bit and spend some quality time with Amy.  I’ve missed hanging out and running with her multiple times each week!

This week I hope to keep up with my cycle classes, and hopefully incorporate a bit of running too, depending on how my knee feels.  Stay warm!
