Monday Mentionings: March 21

Good Monday morning, friends! Spring is here (yesterday, in case you live under a rock)!

Last week, the grass turned green, and the sky turned blue and it looked like spring, until, of course, it turned cold and gross toward the end of the week.  My view at work is still amazing, by the way.

Monday after work, I rode my bike 10 miles to State Line and back, on the trails.  I saw several deer on my little trip.  Spring is so pretty!

It was my first true bike ride on my new bike, besides riding her home from the bike store. The hills weren’t as tough as I was imagining, so I guess my time spent on the cycle bike in cycle class has been paying off!

Michelle was out of town for a few days last week, and Jasper missed her, I think.  You can tell because he’s laying on top of her clothes hamper.  He was here for at least an hour Monday night.

Both Tuesday and Wednesday nights, Amy and I ran our favorite 5 mile loop around the neighborhood.  2 fun, successful runs, done and done!

Thursday, I had lunch with Amy and Joshua before they picked up Amy’s mom from the airport for a visit.  I love hanging out with this little one.  He asked me to be his girlfriend this weekend.  Watch out, ladies, he likes the older gals.

So, there’s this “trophy” at work… the “reply all trophy.” You are awarded the trophy by hitting “reply all” to an email that clearly shouldn’t be a reply all. Well, you can see where this is going… on Friday, I was awarded this prestigious honor, by accidentally replying all to an email that was not meant to be replied to everyone.  So now it sits, at my desk, until it can be “awarded” to the next lucky individual. It’s really a fun little quirk about working for RTS, another reason it’s such a fun and great place to work.

Friday night, since it got chilly again, Michelle and I had chili, cinnamon rolls, and wine.  Perfect Friday night.  For those of you not from the mid-west, do you eat cinnamon rolls with your chili? It was something we grew up doing in western KS, and so many people give me odd looks when I mention it, but it’s just about one of the best things ever.

Later on Friday night, Jasper and I watched Scandal. He got sleepy though.

Saturday morning, I went to cycle class.  Before cycle, I wanted to run a couple miles on the treadmill.  I consider the photo below a success, because my knee started hurting while on the treadmill, and instead of pushing through, I got off and stretched it (the stretch below is how I somehow get the pain in my knee to go away.. thanks Dr. Shabel!).  Once I hopped back on the treadmill, I felt about 90% better!  I finished my run and went to cycle class.

I met up with Amy and her family for brunch, and then did a bit of shopping.  Later, we hung out at her house, and I helped show Joshua how to ride his bike.  No better way to show him than to ride his bike myself!

Then it was haircut/hair color time!  I ended up going quite a bit darker than I have in a while, and chopped off about 3 inches!  It is a tiny bit shorter than I wanted, but it’ll grow in no time, and be perfect!

I’ve finally joined the club (a couple weeks ago) and downloaded snapchat.  I could not stop laughing at the two pictures below.  Oh my goodness. I still crack up when I see Kristen’s. I hope you get a laugh out of it too! (my snap name is renfle if you want to add me. 😛  )

I’m super excited to go home this weekend for a short visit over Easter! I hope everyone has a great week, and a good Easter!

Thursday Thoughts: December 18

This week has been a trying week, especially for my family.

Friday, I got a very sad phone call, my family’s cat, Cooper, was hit by a car and he passed away.  Cooper was the most lovable, cuddly cat you’ve ever met, he would snuggle you to death, and drown you in happy purring kitty drool.  RIP Cooper, we all know you’re getting belly rubs and chasing squirrels and mice in Kitty Heaven now.

Saturday, I came home to Hays to spend a little time with Grandpa.  He had been doing progressively worse, and the Hospice nurses and family in town thought he would be leaving us over the weekend.  Just after midnight this morning, Grandpa passed away.  I am so thankful I got a chance to see him and talk to him a few more times before he went to see Grandma.  I wrote him a little letter, reminiscing on just a few memories.

He was such a fighter, one of the strongest men I knew.  It was really sad seeing some of Grandpa’s friends come in and see him, and to see how touched his brothers and sister are to have family close by.  Grandpa has touched a lot of lives, and he will be missed, but I have no doubt in my mind that he went straight to Heaven to be with Grandma.

Sunday morning Mom, Kristen, Shay and I went on a run; it was nice to spend a little time on the pavement after having a few days off last week and again this week.  I had hoped and planned to run 100 miles (at least) in December, because my total as of the end of November was 800 miles, and I wanted to make 900 miles, but with traveling and Grandpa’s condition, I took 4 days off last week and have taken off 2 days this week… I’ll try to maintain my mileage through the holidays, but doubt I’ll reach 900 for the year.  I’ve outlined my goals for running in 2015, check them out here.

Granddad also ordered some Altra’s, this week, and I was pretty excited that Golden Harper, co-founder of Altra commented on my Altra Torin Review post.  Mom is looking at some Altra’s too, we’re going to be an Altra family soon!

Clockwise starting with puppy feet, Shay, Kristen, Mom, and Me.

Tuesday night we made chili and cinnamon rolls at home, and even though Kristen and Thayne put some icky dry Mustard, Paprika, and Cumin in it, it was pretty tasty.  Since moving to KC and having chili a few times since I’ve been there, I’ve noticed that nobody has chili with cinnamon rolls, it must be a German thing.  Ya’ll are missing out, not having your cinnamon rolls with your chili.  I think Thayne takes it a bit too far though, he puts his cinnamon roll at the bottom of his bowl, then piles chili on top.  I tried taking a bite of chili and cinnamon roll at the asme time, and it was pretty tasty, but I don’t think I could have a cinnamon chili bowl like Thayne.

Photo Dec 16, 6 58 56 PM Dad and Shay had a really special cuddle time with Shay.  She lays down if you try to pick her up, so Dad picked her up and then flipped her over like a baby.

It’s finally feeling like December weather outside, the weather has been so warm lately, it’s kind of refreshing and nice that it is finally cold.  And now that it’s cold, we can have fires! James and I have had a couple fires, and Dad’s started a few since I was home this past week too.  Lucy, Mom and Dad’s little kitty, loves laying by the fire, her fur is so warm and toasty, she just loves it.Photo Dec 16, 6 50 28 PM

I got to see my very favorite Christmas lights/decoration while I was in Hays.  This house ALWAYS has this display up, and it reminds me of driving around looking at Christmas lights as a kid. Photo Dec 16, 10 12 51 PM

Grandpa was still fighting the good fight on Wednesday, so I decided to go back home to KC for a couple days and get back to work.  Driving home on Wednesday afternoon, I started listening to Serial Podcast.  I’ve heard of a lot of runners talk about listening to this while they run, and it is apparently the HOTTEST podcast on Earth right now.  I binge-listened to 5 episodes on my way from Hays to KC, and can’t wait to listen to more.  I definitely recommend it, very captivating, I can’t wait to find out what happens.  It’s a true story about a murder that happened in 1999, and getting to the bottom of who really killed the young woman.

Today, I’m going to finish up some laundry and head back to Hays to be with family and stay through Christmas, and James will join for the funeral and for Christmas.  I can’t believe Christmas is in a week; are you ready?  Have you ever eaten cinnamon rolls with your chili?

Thursday Thoughts: Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!!  I hope everyone enjoys a relaxing day with family and friends, and NOT shopping! Shopping is for Friday, folks!  I do wish you and yours the happiest and merriest of Thanksgivings, enjoy the time with the ones you love.

Last weekend, James and I went to the clubhouse at our apartment complex, and had a chili lunch, it was really tasty.  It’s been quite a while since either of us had chili. They were missing the cinnamon rolls though! I think it must be a German thing, having cinnamon rolls with chili.  I’ll have to tell them for next time. 😉Photo Nov 22, 12 30 59 PM

On Saturday, I ran a loop that included stopping by the little pond where my buddy Edgar the Swan lives.  I didn’t really know if swans migrate like geese, so I figured I’d run by and see if he was still hanging around.  He was.  He wasn’t happy to be sharing his little pond with a bunch of migrating Canadian Geese.  He was sure to chase me and bite at the rocks.

The geese were sure to stay on the other side of the pond, away from Edgar.  When Edgar tried to follow after me, the geese took off and landed on the other side of the pond, and then flip flopped it again as he followed me back up the path.  I was lucky enough to get a picture of a goose flying/running away from Edgar.

Jasper and Toothless.  This picture makes me giggle with glee.  I put Toothless on top of Jazzy’s cube, out of the way, and later Jasper curled up underneath.  Adorable.

Also adorable… when Jasper doesn’t realize his tongue is sticking out while he’s sleeping.

As a surprise to take home for Thanksgiving, I baked my very first 2 pies this week!  I have baked pies before, but it’s always been under Kristen and Mom’s instruction.  Kristen has taught me Grandma’s pie crust over the last few holidays, and I was really glad to be able to replicate it.

Photo Nov 25, 2 52 17 PM

Aside from burning the crusts a little bit, and having to throw out the first batch of pie crust because it was too dry and flaky, I think they turned out pretty good, and hopefully they taste good too!  Cherry pie is my very favorite kind of pie. I can’t wait to have some this weekend with both sides of my family.
