2017: May Running

27 miles. That’s all I managed to run in May.  The theme of the month is knee pain and frustration with the knee pain.

After seeing the orthopedic doctor and my chiropractor several times, I am in less pain now than I started May with, however I also have not had a run in a week and a half, and I haven’t had a substantial run in over 2 weeks. =/  I ran 27 miles in May.  I did other things in May though; I went to 3 cycle classes, a handful of strength classes, and had several walks too.  You can read about my previous months recaps here:  JanuaryFebruaryMarch, and April.

I don’t know how long my running break will be. I’m trying to give my knee the rest it needs, but it’s hard to not run.  All I want to do is run without my knee aching beyond measure.  I’m trying to stay positive and keep believing it will all work out and be okay.

Looking forward to June: I have the Hospital Hill 10k this Saturday, and no other races scheduled. I actually have no races scheduled until September! I’m going to focus on getting my knee healthy and try to be as active as I can while it rehabs.

May stats:
Running:  7 runs, totaling 27 miles.
Biking: 3 cycle classes and 1 bike ride in Hays, totaling 47 miles.
Longest Run: 7 miles, May 13, in Hays, with Kristen, Mom, and Chris
Races: None

2017: February Running

On February 1, I sprained my ankle during the last half mile of my 4 mile run. It got pretty bruised and swollen, and I took just about 10 days off running to let it heal. I did run a mile after 6 days, which initially felt great, but my ankle told me it was too early to be running and I took a few more days off.  I definitely did not run as much as I wanted to in February, but managed to get in 53 miles for the month.  I ran 55 miles in January, you can read all about it here.

After spraining my ankle and not running for a bit, Mom and Dad came down for the 2nd weekend of the month, and we got in a run while Dad biked along; it was the first real run I had since hurting my ankle.

We had some crazy unseasonably warm weather in February, and Chris and had a couple walks/hikes by the lake.  We found this great trail at Shawnee Mission Park that we want to hike, and maybe eventually run – it’s about 3 miles out, and then it ends, so we’d get a 6 mile hike or run out of it.

As far as running goes, I had several good runs, despite my ankle sprain.  Towards the end of the month, my runs have definitely been feeling stronger.  I ran with Chris several times, with KCRC, friends, and Mom and Dad once too… nice variety of running company in February.

I went to a couple cycle classes in February, and I’ve missed them! I need to get back to cycle more often.  Chris went with me, and enjoyed it as well.  We may have a new most-Monday nights tradition!

Looking forward to March, I hope to continue rehabbing my ankle and put in some good quality training runs for the Rock the Parkway half marathon, which is my next race, coming up on April 8.

February stats:
Running: 15 runs, totaling 53 miles.
Cycling: 2 cycle classes, totaling 19 miles.
Longest Run: 6 miles, twice, February 19 and February 26.
Races: None.

2017: January Running

January is over already! I can still vividly remember my first run of 2017, in Cloverdale, Indiana of all places!  Let’s get right into January’s running recap!

I ran 55 miles in January, which is way lower than I prefer, but I spent a week and a half too sick to run and had a very busy month, otherwise.  Overall, I had pretty solid runs, just not quite as often as I would have liked.  My unofficial goal this year is to reach 1000+ miles again.

I started 2017 in Detroit, with Chris and his family.  We had a 12 hour drive home on New Years Day, so naturally, we stopped about halfway to run a mile.  I had told Chris we would have to stop and run at least a mile, because one ALWAYS runs on New Years Day!  He was thrilled, just like I knew he would be. 😉

My longest run in January was 10 miles, which happened on a treadmill, unfortunately.  I needed to get a good solid long run, but it was drizzly and hovering around freezing, with icy spots, so I opted for inside, and had my longest treadmill run to date.

I ran with friends a couple times, ran solo several times, and ran with Chris a bunch too in January.  I had 15 runs total in January, which isn’t terrible.  I like to have 1-2 days off from running each week, so I’m looking forward to picking it up a bit in February.

I finished out January with a strong 5 mile run, which felt great. My goal for February is to add strength training 1-2 times per week over my lunch hour, in addition to my running.

How was your January? Any goals for February?
