The February Run Down

February flew by! It’s hard to believe it’s March, and spring is just around the corner.  The first two months of 2016 have definitely not been the most normal for me, in terms of running.  In December, I set out with a goal to run 1100 miles this year, as well as a handful of other goals.  With a low mileage month in January, as well as a low mileage month in February, I’ve rethought a lot of my goals, and I will write more about that on Thursday.

February started out with a doctor’s appointment, and I was told that my knee is structurally ok, and I’ve been seeing the chiropractor pretty regularly to work on strengthening muscles that aren’t activating and working on getting stronger to be able to build up my mileage.  Because I couldn’t run as much the first two months of the year, I’ve been cycling a lot, and I’ve really been enjoying it.

I had a race in February, my first of the year.  Amy and I ran the Kickoff 5k, which was a 5k around Arrowhead Stadium, on Super Bowl Sunday.  We volunteered this race last year, so it was a fun experience to both volunteer and run it. My race recap is here.

I ran with the KC Running Co. Groupies 5 times in February, including a fun Leap Day run in Martin City.  Michelle even came to one of the Groupie runs, which was a ton of fun!  There were so many nice evenings for runs in February; it was even 75 degrees one day!

Mom and Dad came to town for a weekend, and we all went to a cycle class on Saturday, which was tons of fun! Mom and I ran then on Sunday, and Dad biked along with us, which was great! We saw some deer and a pretty woodpecker and enjoyed the perfect February weather.

I even got Amy to come to one of my cycling classes, and then when we tried to run after, I tripped off the sidewalk and skinned my elbow pretty bad.  I’m really graceful like that.

All in all, February was a good month as far as being active.  I wish I could have run more, but with cycling and running, I think I did pretty good!  I took lots of classes, ran pretty consistently, though each run was shorter than I would have preferred.  Looking forward to March, I have only one race, the Whiskey Run 5k.  Like I said earlier, I’m going to write about my goals and my thoughts about those goals, on Thursday.  How did your February go? How is it FEBRUARY?!  I had a pretty great week last week, and I took lots of pictures to share with ya’ll too!

Jasper enjoys hanging out in my closet, and thinks he’s a pair of shoes, maybe? One of these things is not like the others..

I had ordered a new pair of boots, and Jasper enjoyed playing in the box.  This is a terrifying face, and about 2 seconds after I took this picture, I was pounced on.

I made it to KC Running Co. both  Tuesday and Thursday, which was fantastic! It’s been far too long since I went to Tuesday and Thursday night runs.  Tuesday was 300m repeats at the track, and Thursday night was a nice 4 miler – running to Missouri and back!

With a bit warmer temperatures last week, the lake at work started to thaw.  The geese loved it, and swam around, then stood around on the ice.  I love this picture, because there are even more geese about to land.

Thursday morning, before work, I had my MRI.  I met with Dr. Khadavi early last week, and since I am still having knee pain, he ordered an MRI.  The MRI tech gave me a copy of the disc, so of course, I put it in my computer and looked at it.  Does it even look like a knee? It was cool to look at though, but I have no idea at all what it all means.  I will see Dr. Khadavi again this afternoon to get the diagnosis.  I’m nervous, but know everything will work out in the end.

Saturday was a fantastically fun day.  Amy and I planned to run around 10:30, once it was a little warmer out. Jasper entertained me by laying on my computer and playing with his hedgehog before our run.

Really the only running pictures we have are from races, so after our run, we took turns running down and back this little section of the trail so we could take pictures of each other.  We will have to do this again in the spring, when everything around us isn’t dead and brown.

After we ran, I cleaned up real fast and met Michelle for froyo!  We took a little adventure down 135th St. to Target and Scheels, too.  It was so great to catch up with Belle.

I stopped at Price Chopper on my way home to pick up a few things, and bought this fun little money tree (pachira), and bought it for my office.  Within 30 seconds of purchasing the tree and waking out the door, I spotted a dime on the ground.  Money tree, well done. Let’s keep this up.

I facetimed Mom and Dad to show them my new little tree, and got to say hi to Shay and Gordon, too.  I caught Gordon yawning at me.  All in all, Saturday was a great day.

Sunday morning, I ran with Amy at KC Running Co, then took a nap after I got home and showered.  When I woke up from my nap, Jasper was all curled up on my pillow.  Sweet little bear.

I wrote a post about my January running stats, so be sure to check that out.  I’m pretty pleased at how well January went, considering I had two weeks of no running.  Have a great week, hope all those forecasted for snow and ice this week stay warm and dry!

2015 Running Roundup

December is over today.  This YEAR is over today.  This is hard to believe.  Time to recap December, and the whole year, in running!  You can catch up on the rest of 2015 here: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, and November.  I set out in 2015 with a few goals related to running.  The first goal, that was updated in May, was to run 950 miles in 2015.  With tonight’s run, I will have 71 miles for December, and I will surpass my goal for 950 miles and end with 965 miles for 2015!

My other running goals included PRing my 5k and 10k times, with under 30 minutes for the 5k, and under 62 minutes for the 10k, and running a half marathon with minimal walking.  I reached my 5k goal, and ran a PR of 29:29 at the Wild West 5k.  I missed my 10k goal by 1 minute, and ran 1:03:00 at the Plaza 10k, but I did finish the race hand in hand with my best friend Amy, which was a perfect way to PR the 10k!  During the KC Half Marathon, I ran over 10 miles before walking, and my body felt great, but I was dizzy, so I had to walk.  I ended up PRing my half marathon time by over 10 minutes, and only walked a little bit during mile 11.  I was very happy with all three of these races, and many other races (and PRs) in 2015 as well.

Overall, I’m extremely pleased at how my 2015 running year went.  I gained a lot of endurance, speed, and confidence in my running.  Though I had some setbacks with knee and hamstring pain, I am stronger, mentally and physically, than I’ve ever been going into 2016!

Best 2015 race experience – KC Half Marathon – I love this race, and I had a great race, a huge PR, and during the race, I decided to tackle the full marathon distance in 2016!

Best 2015 run – I had so many “best” runs… runs with Mom and Shay in Hays, runs with the Groupies, runs with my best friend Amy, runs in Milwaukee with my sister… so many memorable runs.  Some runs were great because the run was great, some were great because of the company  – one thing I know for sure, none of the runs in 2015 were regretted!

Best new piece of running gear in 2015 – Hoka Clifton shoes! I tried out Hokas about halfway through 2015, and haven’t looked back! I wear my Hokas almost exclusively, and I wear my Altras here and there also.

Best running advice you’ve received in 2015 – “I can do hard things.”

Most inspirational runner in 2015 – My sister, Kristen. She’s so strong and always pushes me to go harder, longer, faster, and stronger than I ever thought.  She runs for her cousin Martilee, who has Rett Syndrome, and is raising awareness and money to help fight Rett Syndrome.  She has focus, positivity, and consistency that I strive for every day.

Favorite race picture of 2015 – This picture was taken at the Plaza 10k, about a half mile after I caught up to Amy, with about 2.5 miles left in the race.  I stayed right behind her, and about .15 from the finish line, I popped up beside her and we ran in together, and crossed the finish line hand in hand!

Race experience from 2015 you would repeat in a heartbeat – Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas 5k – HUGE fun party from start to finish!  The racecation was lots of fun, but unfortunately the half marathon weather was awful! The 5k though, definitely a fantastic experience!
