Thursday’s Three today is all about blood donation! Earlier this week, I donated blood. This was the 14th (or so) time I’ve donated blood, and will certainly not be my last! For those of you who donate blood, thank you! For those of you who medically can’t donate blood, it’s okay, *high five* anyway. For those of you who are on the fence, perhaps thinking about donating for the first time, or haven’t donated in a long time and are considering donating again…
I give you my top 3 reasons for donating blood:1. You can save up to 3 lives with 1 donation of whole blood! During a whole blood donation session, you donate 1 pint of blood, which is about 1/10 of the blood in your body. Every 2 seconds, someone in America needs a blood transfusion, and that means lots of blood is needed! By donating blood, every 8 weeks you can save 3 lives! (stats: American Red Cross).
2. You get snacks after you donate! Every blood drive I’ve been to has snacks like oreos, pretzels, or cheez-its, and usually water or orange juice after you donate, to make sure your blood sugar levels are okay before you leave. So when I donate blood at work, I get extra time to chill after donating, before I have to get back to work!3. It’s a totally free way to help and give to those in need. If you are strapped for cash and can’t donate money to a cause or don’t have the time to donate to a community project, you can quickly and easily, and relatively painlessly donate blood! The entire donation process (check-in, health screening, and donation) takes less than 1 hour. —PLUS, the little health screening they do, which includes blood pressure, pulse, and iron levels, is like a mini physical!— For me, from start to finish, donating blood usually takes 30-45 minutes, not the full hour, because once they get my vein going, my happy little blood fills the pint bag quickly!
If you would like more information about donating blood, please visit the American Red Cross, and find a blood dive in your area. You get to be a hero, 3 people get to live because of you, and your body is magic and replenishes the blood in a few weeks, so it’s a renewable, easy, and amazing way to donate the gift of life!
