Thursday Thoughts: April 30

A busy week this week!  I’ll give a short recap of my week, since I’ve already written about last weekend’s fun.

Last weekend was Trolley Run weekend; my mom came and we had a great weekend. You c an read my race recap here, and read about my awesome weekend with Mom here   Mom found this adorable Huskers shirt for her kitty Gordon, and when she got back to Hays she sent this pic. So cute. I’m sure Gordon is thrilled to be wearing it! Of course, her other kitty Lucy had to try it on too!    Jasper is all about his new pot of cat grass. Mom planted the seeds, and every night Jasper has gotten into the pot to inspect. I can’t wait until the grass grows enough for him to nibble on it!!   When mom was here last weekend we went to a really neat meditation and crystal shop on 39th St. and I bought a singing bowl. I’ve admired moms for a while, and decided this is the right time to get one for myself. We also found this Buddha at Pier One. I love him so much!   Today is the last day of April, which means the April Fitness Challenge is ending. I did some extra push ups and squats last night to finish the challenge. So as of this morning I have completed 1000 push ups, 2000 squats, and 3000 sit ups in April! I’d love for you to share how you did in the comments below.  I will miss the Groupie run tonight because I’m going to the Avengers premiere, but I’m definitely looking forward to running more in May! I received my first allergy injection yesterday, and it was pretty uneventful. I’m super ready for my body to begin building up immunity to these allergens so I can feel better!

Happy May, tomorrow!

Weekend with Momma

Mom came down to KC this weekend to hang out and to run the Trolley Run with me.  Friday when Mom got to town, we ran a few miles on the trails near my home.  It was so pretty! We saw several deer, a muskrat, a few ducks and geese, tons of songbirds, and a grounhog!  We also saw some runners and bikers. 😛  It was a gorgeous evening for a run.

Saturday, we did lots of shopping and picked up our race packets for the Trolley Run.  We walked around the Overland Park downtown farmers market for a bit too, which was really cool. We also went to Pop Up Yoga which was at the downtown KC Library.

It was supposed to be on the rooftop, but it was raining on and off all morning, and started raining about 20 minutes before yoga was to begin! We moved right inside from the outdoor patio, and the doors were open, so a nice fresh breeze was moving through the room during yoga.

This was my second Pop Up Yoga class, and Mom’s first.  It was a really nice, slow, gentle class, and the rain outside was just a perfect backdrop.  I wrote a bit about Pop Up Yoga last time I went, when we did some pop up yoga on the Nelson Atkins Museum lawn.

After yoga, Mom and I did a bit more shopping and wandering around downtown KC, and ate an early dinner at Cinzetti’s, an Italian buffet! Who knew you could go to an Italian Buffet?!

These adorable little frog yoga figurines were at a greenhouse/ nursery that we stopped at.  So cute.  I wanted to buy them all!

Sunday, after the race, we hung around the house for a while, and then went to the mall with Amy and her little boy.  Mom even found an adorable Nebraska jersey for her kitty, Gordon! She bought it at Build-a-Bear Workshop!

We had an early dinner at Ted’s Cafe Escondido, which just recently opened up in Overland Park on 135th and Metcalf.  SO GOOD! I had eaten at Ted’s Cafe once before, in OKC, but it had been many years.  It was as good, or maybe even better than I remember!! Warm fresh tortillas, fresh salsa, homemade cheese dip, yum yum!  And after dinner, complimentary sopaipillas!

I did NOT want to get up and come to work today, especially because Mom was still at home with Jasper. It was a fantastic and fun filled weekend.  I had a lot of fun with Momma, racing, running, shopping, eating, and being!

Trolley Run Recap

This morning was the Trolley Run! I have been looking forward to this race for quite a while, and I’ve heard great things about it!  My Mom drove down for the weekend, and we had a great weekend visit and ran the race this morning.

The Trolley Run is one of the largest 4 mile road races in the US, and this year was the 27th year of the race.  The Trolley Run is the largest annual fund raiser for Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired.

The course is unique because is a point to point course, beginning on 75th and Wornall in Waldo, and ending on the Plaza.  We met up with my Mom’s cousin, Kim, and my running buddy Amy, and took the bus from the Plaza to the starting line.  It was a dreary and chilly morning, but luckily, the rain held off!

We tried to stay warm around the start line, and listened to a beautiful Star Spangled Banner, and then the race began!  Each wave had about 5 minutes between it, and there were 6 waves of runners.  I think I heard someone say there were nearly 10,000 runners and walkers, which was a great turnout!

My strategy for the race, which was mostly flat and fast, with some nice downhill stretches, and only a couple small uphills, was to just go out strong and steady and try to hang on!  There were some fun signs, one said “Running 4 miles is easy, getting up early on Sunday morning is HARD!”  So true.  There was also a really cute family grilling bacon and the little kids were holding plates of bacon out for the runners!

I finished the race about 3 and a half minutes faster than my previous best 4 mile race (last spring in Hays).  I was really happy with my race, I felt like I left it all on the course, and now I have a shiny new PR! In looking at my mile times, I negative split the race perfectly, meaning the second half of the ride was faster than the first half. Each of my mile splits was faster than the previous!

If any race photos turn out (there were a TON of runners all around!) I will edit the post and add them later this week.

Mom, Kim, Amy and I all met up again after the race, and we enjoyed some of the finish festival, but it was pretty chilly, especially since we all ran hard!  Another buddy from our running group also found us after the race, so of course we had to get some photos with John!

All in all, it was a fantastic race!! Amy and I both PR’d, the weather held off, no rain! Later this afternoon, the sun came out and it warmed up really nicely.  I will definitely do this race again in the future, it was a beautiful course, a well run race, and a really great local cause!
