September Run Streak

Well, September is over… and 30 short days ago, I set out to run every day in September in my first ever Run Streak.  My run streak rule was to run at least 1 mile, every day.  (The rules vary, some people streak to run more miles each day, I just set out to run at least 1 mile, every day for 30 days.)  I made it 26 days.  Last weekend, I came down with a sinus infection, and went to the doctor.  Sinus pressure has made my head pound for the last week, and running is the very last thing I wanted to do.

I was upset with myself that I couldn’t finish the month long streak, but also very proud of myself that I made it 26 days.  Previously, the longest “streak”  was 6-7 days.  I have always taken at least one rest day per week.  This September Run Streak definitely brought me out of my running shell. I don’t know when I will attempt another run streak again, but I can say I will attempt it again!

In other running news, I was very surprised to open Facebook last evening and find a post from KC Running Company, and I won a pair of free shoes!! I have seen KCRC give away free race entries to Groupies wearing KCRC gear at races, but never a pair of shoes! I was so excited!!  The photo was from the Labor Day 5k race James and I ran/walked on September 1.

I can’t wait to cash in! I recently ordered a pair of Altra running shoes, and have really been enjoying them so far.  My sister has ordered a pair of New Balance 980’s; perhaps I will look into a pair of those, or try out something new altogether.  It will be really nice to have a second pair of shoes in my rotation again, I’ve been running with just 1 pair lately.

THANK YOU KCRC!! KCRC has definitely been the best running friend(s) since I moved to KC, and I am excited for the future!

What kind of shoes should I get? Do you have different brands/shoes in your rotation? Have you run-streaked before?

Thursday Thoughts: September 25

I feel like this week has flown by.  My parents were here over the weekend, and now, it’s Thursday already!

With the cooler weather, Jasper has been so cuddly, chirpy, and playful.  I love this time of year, and apparently so does Jasper!

I made my grandma’s famous Macaroni Corn Casserole Sunday night, and have been noming on the left overs all week.  She always made it for holidays when I was growing up, and I liked it, but it was never my favorite… but over the last few years, I’ve just LOVED it, and was craving it a few weeks ago, so I made it for the first time! We also grilled steaks on the George Foreman.  Delicious little meal!

Grandma’s Macaroni Corn Casserole:

1/2 cup margarine
1 cup dry macaroni (elbow)
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 can creamed corn
1 can undrained whole kernel corn

Melt margarine, and mix with remaining ingredients.  Pour into 2 quart casserole dish, and bake, covered for 30 minutes at 350 degrees, then stir, and bake uncovered for an additional 30 minutes.  Serves 6-8.

This week, I found the best tacos ever.  The. Best. Tacos. Ever.  EVER!  A little hole in the wall mexican/burger/gyro place near where I work called Burger To Go and/or Cancun Fiesta Fresh, in downtown KCK.  Not really sure what it’s called, since there are 2 signs.  For those of you who are in or around KC, it’s at the corner of 7th St. Trafficway and Central.  They sell burritos and tacos, burgers, gyros, and other random food.  I tried the taco, and OH my gosh, amazing.

Also this week, my new Altra Running shoes came, and I took them out for a quick mile on Monday! I will do a review of the Altra Torin’s once I’ve run in them a bit more.  The zero-drop philosophy and foot shaped toe box has intrigued me for a while, I’d heard good things about Altra.  A couple weeks ago I had the chance to try a pair of Altra Paradigm’s at the KCRC Groupies run, and definitely felt a difference from my Saucony Kinvara’s.  I researched more about Altra Running online and decided to try a pair of Torin’s, which have a little less cushioning than the Paradigm’s, but still have zero drop and the wider toe box.  Check back soon for my review and comparison.

Tonight at the KCRC Groupie run, we tested Garmin watches.  I have a Garmin 210 (the white one), and love it, but was really excited for the opportunity to try the Garmin 620 (the black one).  It was really cool and had lots of techy features.  It was probably a bad thing that I tried it, because now I want one!  Tonight was also my 4th run in my new Altra’s, and I’m really enjoying them so far!  My September Run Streak is almost over, tonight’s run put me at 25 days in a row of at least a mile, and I’m over 60 miles for this month, which puts me higher than the last couple months.

Have you ever drastically switched running shoes, or switched brands? Do you use a running watch? Do you love all the techy features and get reeked out like me?  Have a great weekend!

September Visit

My parents came to town this weekend, and we crammed as much into 2 days as we could!  My grandpa was planning on coming too, but he’s been fighting some health problems and stayed home.  Wish he could have visited, but I’m glad my parents were still able to make it.  We had tickets for the Saturday afternoon Royals game, so they came into town Friday night.

Saturday morning, Mom and I got up and ran a few miles in the the neighborhood area, and I was able to show her some of my favorite running places, including the roundabout fountain and a little pond with a swan.

The swan, who I have lovingly named Edgar, is not a happy swan.  I’ve been on the trail around the pond before, and Edgar follows you in the water, never looking too thrilled to have company on his pond.  Mom and I stopped to see what would happen, and he got out and started chasing us!  We ran a bit and he hopped back in the water to follow us.

We headed to the Royals game around 10:30, there were a TON of people there! It was very warm, and very sunny.  I actually got a sunburn on my shoulders and chest, but it clouded up after 3-4 innings, and was much more comfortable after that.

We had great seats, and several foul balls came close on either side of us, Dad actually jumped up to try to go after one, but the rail stopped him quick.  Unfortunately, the Royals lost, but it was a lot closer game than the first game we went to in July (with my parents).  James and I went to a game in August, and the Royals won.  It was a great day for a game though, and the crowd was fantastic, lots of cheering and a great energy.

The Royals won today, which is great.  Lots of talk of playoffs, and the Royals have drawn the biggest crowds this year in decades. I’m really glad we were able to go to a few games this summer, and hope we’ll get to see more games next year! Go Royals!

After the Royals game, we came back to the apartment, chilled for a bit, changed into Nebraska gear, and went to Callahan’s to watch the Nebraska/Miami game.  The atmosphere in the bar was the best I’ve seen.  Everyone was cheering for the Huskers, everyone was cheering loudly and getting into the game.  Every time the Huskers scored, a siren light would go off, and everyone went nuts.

There was even Lil’ Red there to get cheer for the Huskers! We’ll definitely be back, Callahans is our official Huskers watching bar! Saturday was a crazy full day of sports! We were pretty tuckered out by the time we got back to the apartment, and headed straight to bed.

This morning, Mom and I went to the KCRC Groupies Sunday Runday!  The route was gorgeous, different than the last Sunday Runday from the groupies.  It was cool, calm, gorgeous! We saw ducks, squirrels, lots of other runners and bikers.  KCRC had a Feetures rep and Sacuony reps out, and we all got a free pair of Feetures! There were Saucony shoes to try out, and even though we didn’t this time, it was great to have the option.  I tried Altra Running shoes at one of the last running groupies runs, and ended up buying a pair!

After Mom and Dad left midday, James and I took a wonderful Sunday nap, and saw a movie.  It was such a great weekend, and it was fantastic to hang out with Mom and Dad, it had been far too long.  Now in 2 weeks, Mom and Dad and I will fly up to Milwaukee to visit Kristen and Thayne! 2 short weeks after that Kristen will fly down and we will run the Kansas City Half Marathon.  Yay for family visits!

Did you watch any baseball or football this weekend? It’s fall… cooler weather and football season! Do you love fall as much as I do?
